Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary is set to premiere on November 29 on HBO. The film is directed by Garret Price, who examines the history and legacy of Yacht Rock, a smooth, easy-listening style of music in the late 70s and early 80s led by the likes of Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, and Toto. “The singers all seem to be saying, ‘Hey, it’s gonna be OK,’” Fred Armisen says in the trailer for the documentary. “It’s perfect sitting down dancing music,” Questlove adds. The film captures how Yacht Rock dominated the music landscape before suddenly disappearing due to the rise of music videos. The genre has enjoyed a resurgence as of late, thanks to hip-hop producers sampling these old records, Yacht Rock-themed DJ nights, cruises, and music festivals, along with the web comedy series Yacht Rock, which popularized the now ubiquitous genre name.
