The third single from ZZ Top's Eliminator album, “Legs” joined predecessors “Gimme All Your Lovin'” and “Sharp Dressed Man” on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at Number Eight.
Ten months later, it reached Number 16 on the U.K. chart.
The song's lyrics hid nothing — the tune, like so many in ZZ Top's canon, is an appreciation of the female anatomy.
The hosiery maker Leggs also recognized the song's appeal and contracted with the band to use “Legs” for pantyhose ads.
Like its predecessors, “Legs” was supported by a stylish, witty video that featured the band, some beautiful models and the real Eliminator — a 1933 Ford three-window coupe that became one of ZZ Top's signatures.
While their high-profile videos helped make them superstars, ZZ Top became known as much for their look — especially singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons' and singer-bassist Dusty Hill's foot-long beards — as their hard 'n' heavy blues-based sound.
Ironically, drummer Frank Beard was the only band member at the time to not sport the group's trademark facial hair arrangement, preferring a mustache instead. These days, however, he also wears a beard.
Thanks to the hit singles, the Eliminator album peaked at Number Nine on the Billboard 200, stayed on the chart for nearly three years, and went on to sell more than seven million copies.
