Texas hunters could see strong deer numbers and slightly better-than-average antler quality during the upcoming season. Texas Parks and Wildlife estimates the state’s white-tailed deer population at about 5.6 million following three strong years of fawn survival. Improved rainfall during late spring and early summer also helped habitat conditions in many parts of the state. Biologists say regions including the Edwards Plateau and Western Rolling Plains could experience particularly favorable conditions. Hunters are also being asked to watch for signs of New World Screwworm and report suspected cases to wildlife officials. Texas Parks and Wildlife says proper herd and habitat management remains important for maintaining healthy deer populations.
