Democrat Gina Hinojosa has defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, ending his bid for a fourth term and putting a Democrat in the Texas governor’s office for the first time since 1994. Hinojosa, a state representative from Austin, campaigned on strengthening public education, addressing the rising cost of living and reducing corporate influence in state government. Despite being significantly outspent by Abbott, she gained momentum late in the campaign as voters raised concerns about school vouchers, data centers and affordability. Abbott conceded Tuesday night, bringing an end to his 12 years as governor.
