Federal officials have authorized the emergency use of a horse medication to help prevent New World screwworm infestations. The FDA says prescription ivermectin liquid can now be used in horses for up to 24 hours after birth or during initial wound treatment to reduce the risk of infestation. New World screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and can pose a serious threat to livestock and other warm-blooded animals. Officials stress the medication is intended only for prevention, not treatment of active infestations. Veterinarians say horse owners should continue using other fly-control measures alongside the medication.
